New UN report details Nicaragua’s ongoing human rights crisis

The human rights situation in Nicaragua has “seriously deteriorated” over the past year, following arbitrary arrests, mistreatment of detainees, attacks on Indigenous people, and intimidation of political opponents, according to a UN human rights office (OHCHR) report released on Tuesday.

The repercussions of the July 28 election in Venezuela continue to grow, as President Nicolás Maduro’s refusal to release the ballots from the election to certify the vote count announced by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council has driven a wedge into relations in what was once a relatively closely aligned bloc of left-wing Latin American nations.

Rector of Nicaragua’s Matagalpa Seminary arrested

Nicaragua’s authorities arrest the rector of Matagalpa Seminary, also parish priest of Santa María de Guadalupe church. Fr. Jarvin Tórrez has been in prison since 5 August according to human rights activists and organisations who have also reported the detention of a lay collaborator, Lesbia Rayo Balmaceda, from a parish in Sébaco.

El sacerdote nicaragüense de origen miskito Rodolfo Napoleón French Naar, de la diócesis de Siuna, en el Caribe de Nicaragua, no pudo retornar a su país por la negativa del Gobierno que preside el sandinista Daniel Ortega, denunció este martes la abogada e investigadora nicaragüense exiliada Martha Patricia Molina.
