Lebanon’s Maronite Patriarch Slams ‘Cold-blooded Violation of Constitution’

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rai said on Sunday that parliament’s failed attempt to elect a president on Wednesday was a “cold-blooded violation of the constitution.”

He called the session a “farce” and urged every official to “admit their mistakes and correct them” after nearly eight months of presidential vacuum in Lebanon.

Al-Rai refuses to link the election of a president to the Gaza war

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Al-Rai continues to push for filling the presidential vacancy in Lebanon, and to stop violating the constitution in this area. Al-Rai rejects some officials’ use of the Gaza war as an excuse and linking the election of a new president to it and its repercussions in the region and the world.

While presiding over the Mass of Pentecost in Bkerke, Lebanon today, Al-Rahi stressed in his sermon that “it is necessary to have a president of the republic who alone can sit at the negotiating table.” He added: “For us, there is no justification for not electing the President of the Republic so that the constitutional institutions are organized, the Constitution is preserved, and violations of it are stopped on a daily basis.”

El cardenal Bechara Raï denuncia que Europa «está creando futuros terroristas» en el Líbano

El patriarca maronita afirma que el amontonamiento de refugiados en el país supone «un cargamento de mercancías perdidas» que está dejando la UE.

El patriarca maronita del Líbano, cardenal Béchara Boutros Raï, principal figura de la Iglesia católica en el país, expresó el domingo pasado su decepción «por el fracaso de cooperación de los países europeos y de otros países del mundo con el Líbano» en la crisis de la custodia de los refugiados sirios, que suponen «un cargamento de mercancías perdidas que Europa está dejando en el país». 

Según informa el periódico libanés L’Orient Today, Raï denunció en su homilía dominical la incapacidad de los países occidentales para resolver el problema de los desplazados y su regreso a su país de origen». La razón es que dichos países «están utilizando a esta gente para sus propósitos políticos en Siria», dijo el patriarca maronita.
