Portuguese abuse survivors tell bishops to stop ‘revictimization’

An association of survivors abuse in Portugal has complained to the bishops’ conference earlier this week about the way how the Portuguese Church has been handling reporting and compensation of victims, and asked the prelates to stop “revictimization.” The meeting between the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (known by the acronym CEP) and the Associação Coração Silenciado (“Silenced Heart Association”), which brings together dozens of victims, occurred in Coimbra on July 10.

Al menos 39 víctimas de abusos sexuales en ámbitos eclesiales de Portugal han reclamado una indemnización económica después de que la Conferencia Episcopal Portuguesa no haya comunicado públicamente el estudio realizado por el grupo Vita y presentado al episcopado en su asamblea celebrada en Fátima en mayo de 2023. La petición ha surgido tras la presentación de los resultados del informe propuesto por la entidad al cumplirse el primer año.

Portuguese Bishops Announce Financial Compensation Fund for Church Abuse Victims

The Portuguese Episcopal Conference announced on Thursday the creation of a “financial compensation” fund for victims of Church abuse in that country.

The Conferência Episcopal Portuguesa (CEP) said on its website that the bishops at their plenary assembly “unanimously approved the allocation of financial compensation, on a supplementary basis, to victims of sexual abuse against vulnerable children and adults in the context of the Catholic Church in Portugal.”
