The network posts a short video of the pope offering his specific prayer intention each month. For the month of July, the pope dedicated his prayer intention to the pastoral care of the sick. “The anointing of the sick is not a sacrament only for those who are at the point of death,” the pope said, emphasizing “it is important that this is clear.” Having a priest give the sacrament does not necessarily mean saying “goodbye to life,” he said. “Thinking this way means giving up every hope.”

In Portland, one of the West Coast cities grappling with a large and growing homeless population, Catholic Charities of Oregon runs a tiny home village for formerly homeless women — where they can live communally, receive case management, decorate their own walls with art and photographs, and lock the door at night. Recently, a group of homeless campers began living near that community, known as Kenton Women’s Village, with some individuals bothering residents, said Rose Bak, chief program officer at Catholic Charities. “We’ve been trying to get them to move on because they are causing a safety hazard,” Bak said. “But it’s really tricky to navigate because they have nowhere to go.” Shelters in the city are often full and have a long waitlist, according to a recent city audit. Yet both agency and church leaders told NCR the answer to the complexities of homelessness is not fines or jail time, an approach many cities could adopt following a major ruling on homelessness by the Supreme Court.

In the architecturally gorgeous city of Lviv in western Ukraine sits Ukrainian Catholic University. After several name and affiliation changes, in 2002 it became the first Catholic university to open on the land of the former Soviet Union. The university is small, but its reputation is large. Visiting in April, I repeatedly heard it called “one of our best universities.” War forces those in power to rethink the future. UCU has adjusted its strategic plan to the reality of the war and the role it is now playing in the war effort and the aftermath as the nation begins to slowly prepare for rebuilding. The university will continue to help veterans and civilians deal with physical trauma and mental health issues, and provide services to the country’s many war veterans. The Ukrainian Catholic University was reconstituted after the fall of communism in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Bishop Borys Gudziak — American-born, from Syracuse New York — was a leader in establishing UCU, serving as its first rector and now as president. But his long-term plans for the university shifted when Russia invaded Ukraine Feb. 24, 2022, and the entire UCU community quickly became engaged in the war effort.

A group of approximately 60 religious groups has made a public call to the Cuban government to take concrete steps to improve its record on human rights, including reforms that will protect freedom of religion or belief (FoRB). The Alliance of Christians of Cuba (ACC), an independent network of religious leaders created in 2022, published the statement following their second annual general meeting on 26 June 2024 in the city of Las Tunas. In the statement, the group condemns the Cuban government’s ongoing violations of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and calls for a new legal framework that will allow religious groups to register, noting that this will make it possible for legal action to be taken when FoRB violations occur. The group goes on to demand the release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience and urges the government to immediately halt ‘pre-criminal’ legal proceedings, which are used to try individuals suspected of the potential to commit crimes in the future, including political ‘crimes’. Since 1 January 2024 CSW has documented 20 cases across eight provinces of religious leaders, including those of Christian and Afro-Cuban religious groups, being subjected to harassment, threats and fines because of their lack of legal recognition. In some cases, a registered religious association worshipping in an unregistered location was affected. In others, a religious leader was targeted because of the unregistered status of both the religious group and the location.

La cosmóloga italiana ha participado recientemente en un congreso internacional en el Vaticano para reivindicar el legado científico del sacerdote y astrofísico belga, Georges Lemaître que, junto a otros científicos, estudió los agujeros negros y otros misterios sin resolver del universo. ¿Qué impresión se ha traído de vuelta de la cita académica en el observatorio vaticano de Castel Gandolfo de hace unos días? Era un congreso dedicado a celebrar la obra y el trabajo de Georges Lemaître y se habló, por ejemplo, de la detección de las ondas gravitacionales. Me impresionó que fuera un congreso de amplio espectro argumental porque normalmente este tipo de encuentros se centran en temas muy específicos y se invitan a expertos muy focalizados en su propia investigación, pero creo que el Vaticano logró aunar diferentes perspectivas. Había incluso un humanista experto en la obra de Lemaître desde el punto de vista histórico y filosófico. Esto es ya en sí mismo un milagro, porque los científicos solemos centrarnos en nuestros temas y no compartirlo con otros que no sean de nuestro mismo sector.

Vino a España con el que entonces era su marido en un viaje académico por unas jornadas del doctorado de él, y a la hora de regresar, Wendy cayó gravemente enferma y tuvo que ser hospitalizada en Madrid. «Me dijeron que no podía volver a Cuba porque allí no había los recursos necesarios para tratar mi enfermedad cardiopulmonar», relata. «Sufrí muchísimo tomando la decisión, pero opté por la vida aún sin tener en España amigos ni familia ni dinero ni trabajo».
