Card. Zenari (Nuncio): “Syria has fallen out of the headlines. Forgotten by news media and by the international community”

Every day, some 500 Syrian Christians emigrate from Syria. “What hurts us most is to see Christians leaving,” says Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio to Syria. “We see the churches die. It’s as though one more bomb had been dropped,” he said during the 44th National Congress of Diocesan Caritas. Speaking to SIR about the current state of the conflict following Israel’s attacks on Iranian targets in Syria, he said: “My fear is that if things go on like this, there will be an escalation on an international level. There are three countries that need to take action to try and find a political solution to the war: Damascus, Washington and Brussels. Europe, in particular, could do more”
